Benthic Foraminiferal Response to Trace Elements in a Tropical Mesotidal Brazilian Estuary

چکیده

Abstract Living benthic foraminifera have been widely used as ecological indicators in coastal ecosystems. There is, however, a lack of studies on their response to trace element pollution tropical estuarine systems. Here we analyze the living assemblages foraminifera, collected 2016, Cachoeira River Estuary (CRE) northeastern Brazil, understand natural and anthropogenic stressors, including pollution. Some species were good bioindicators specific environmental conditions, such agglutinant Paratrochammina clossi which preferred mangrove areas anoxic conditions. In addition, calcareous Ammonia tepida Cribroelphidium excavatum , dominant within whole system disregarding organic or pollution, seem resist even most polluted by elements. Interestingly, C. showed particular positive relationship with (specifically Cu Pb), outnumbering opportunistic A. higher these metals. However, for other species, it is still difficult constrain parameters they respond (i.e., Haynesina germanica Elphidium gunteri present study whereas literature are regarded respectively). Therefore, our findings shed light foraminiferal highly mixed highlight need complexity environments when applying biological indexes avoid imprecise conclusions.

Eutrophication induced changes in benthic community structure of a flow-restricted tropical estuary (Cochin backwaters), India.

The influence of anthropogenic loading on the distribution of soft bottom benthic organisms of a tropical estuary (Cochin backwaters) was examined. The industrial activities were found to be high in the northern and central part of the estuary, where dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN > 210 μM) and phosphorus (DIP > 6.5 μM) have caused high abundance of chlorophyll a (up to 73 mg m(-3)) and accu...

Temporal variation of diatom benthic propagules in a monsoon influenced tropical estuary

Temporal variations in the diatom benthic propagule (DBP) community and its role in the phytoplankton community in a monsoon-affected tropical estuary, Zuari estuary, Goa (India) is presented. The DBP from the sediments was enumerated using an extinction dilution method (Most Probable Number method), which allows estimation of resting stages through examination of germinated vegetative cells in...

Recruitment and Succession in a Tropical Benthic Community in Response to In-Situ Ocean Acidification

Ocean acidification is a pervasive threat to coral reef ecosystems, and our understanding of the ecological processes driving patterns in tropical benthic community development in conditions of acidification is limited. We deployed limestone recruitment tiles in low aragonite saturation (Ωarag) waters during an in-situ field experiment at Puerto Morelos, Mexico, and compared them to tiles place...

Population ecology of the blue crab Callinectes danae (Crustacea: Portunidae) in a Brazilian tropical estuary.

This paper aims at describing the population ecology of the swimming crab Callinectes danae Smith, 1869 in one of the most productive estuaries of Brazil, the Santa Cruz Channel. These crabs were monthly collected from January to December/2009 at four stations along the channel, two in the upper and two in the lower estuary. A total of 2373 specimens of C. danae were collected during the study....
